Sharpening pencils & preparing word clues!
Definition Quiz is MÉ-MO's speed round for vocabulary lovers. Each question shows you a short dictionary-style definition and a set of candidate words, and your job is simply to tap the word that matches. There is no typing and no grid to fill — just reading, recognition and nerve, repeated against a ticking countdown. Because every definition comes from the same curated word bank that powers our crosswords, the game doubles as stealth training for crossword clues: the phrasing you meet here is the phrasing setters use in grids.
What keeps the quiz tense is the streak system. Correct answers in a row build a multiplier, so a calm run of five or six matches is worth far more than the same answers scattered between mistakes. A shrinking timer ring keeps the pressure visible, progress dots show how far through the round you are, and when a definition genuinely stumps you, a 50/50 lifeline removes half the options. It is a two-minute game that fits a coffee break, but the scores reward players who build deep, reliable vocabulary rather than fast guessers.
Yes. A countdown runs for the whole round and a timer ring shows how much is left. Your score combines correct answers, speed and your best streak multiplier, so finishing comfortably with time to spare beats finishing at the buzzer.
It removes half of the wrong options on the current question, leaving the correct answer and a reduced set of distractors. Lifelines are limited, so the strongest play is to save them for genuinely ambiguous definitions late in a high-streak run.
Directly. The definitions are written in crossword-clue style and drawn from the same word bank as our Daily Crossword and Mini Crossword, so every round trains exactly the recognition you need when those words appear as grid entries.
